Turkish Red Crescent provides aid for Somalis this Ramadan

The Turkish Red Crescent has recently picked up pace in its humanitarian aid delivered to drought-stricken Somalia as the Muslim-majority country is set to experience the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in the face of a serious famine threat.
The NGO has provided more than 70,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Somalis, and has also delivered more than 10,000 tents and beds to the country.

The Turkish Red Crescent has recently picked up pace in its humanitarian aid delivered to drought-stricken Somalia as the Muslim-majority country is set to experience the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in the face of a serious famine threat. The Turkish nongovernmental humanitarian aid organization (NGO) on Tuesday delivered kitchen supply sets and food to 576 families in the Kaxda region of the Somali capital of Mogadishu. The Turkish Red Crescent delegation, headed by the vice president of the NGO, Naci Yorulmaz, paid a visit to an orphanage in Mogadishu and distributed meals to scores of children. Despite facing challenges such as drought, famine and contagious diseases, Somalia is preparing to welcome Ramadan.
In this regard, the Turkish Red Crescent has ramped up its efforts in the country.
Having launched a comprehensive humanitarian aid campaign for three famine-stricken countries, South Sudan, Yemen and Somalia, the Turkish Red Crescent will feed hundreds of thousands of people during Ramadan as three ships, each loaded with 15,000 tons of food and humanitarian aid, will arrive in the aforementioned countries over the next few weeks.
Apart from food and humanitarian aid distributions from time to time, the Turkish NGO provides thousands of Somali families with bread and food on a daily basis through mobile bakery and kitchen projects.
Stationed in central Mogadishu, the mobile bakery produces more than 4,000 units of bread every day. Around 13 million units of bread have been distributed to those in need since the launch of the mobile bakery.
The Turkish Red Crescent’s mobile kitchen project has borne fruit as well, with more than 7,000 units of hot meals cooked on a daily basis in the mobile kitchen. The hot meals have been distributed to a total of 27 centers, including three hospitals, four centers for the disabled, 19 orphanages and a children’s rehabilitation center.
Turkey has been a good example for the entire world with regards to lending a helping hand to the people of Somalia who require basic humanitarian aid. According to Turkey’s Ambassador to Somalia, Olgan Bekar, who recently spoke to Daily Sabah, the country’s efforts for Somalia alone can match those of the U.N.
As for the Turkish Red Crescent, the NGO has provided more than 70,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Somalis, and has also delivered more than 10,000 tents and beds to the country. These figures will increase following the wide-scale humanitarian aid provided during Ramadan.
Ankara places great emphasis on developing long-term projects for famine-stricken poor countries such as Somalia. The Turkish Red Crescent has been backing the Mogadishu Municipality in carrying out its services. Also, the Turkish NGO is developing several projects, including garbage collection, road construction, waste water reclamation and debris removal, for the rehabilitation of the people of Somalia and reconstruction of the cities.
The Somalian-Turkish Research Hospital, which was opened in 2015 in Mogadishu by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is an example of how the Turkish people help Somalia through long-term, permanent projects. The 230-bed hospital provides training for prospective Somalian healthcare personnel. The hospital has been built to serve two million people living in Mogadishu and towns near the capital and offers services to an average of 6,000 people every month, with about 100 surgeries performed monthly.
The 2017 famine in Somalia, which is expected to surpass that of 2011, may lead to starvation affecting hundreds of thousands of people if the world does not take urgent steps as soon as possible. The crisis has already ushered inn a wave of migration inside Somalia. There are currently three million internally displaced people (IDPs) in Somalia, according to information provided by the Turkish Red Crescent.
Somalia was one of four regions singled out by the U.N. earlier in 2017 in a $4.4 billion aid appeal to avert catastrophic hunger and famine, along with Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen.
Mass starvation and drought lead to serious diseases as well, as due to a lack of clean water in many areas, there is the additional threat of cholera, among other illnesses. U.N. experts have issued a warning as numerous deaths from cholera have been reported over the past couple of months.
