Mar 14 UPDATE: other sources say tanker was under Sri Lanka flag. Voice of America
reported on Mar 13 alleged hijack of an UAE tanker in Gulf of Aden by Somalian pirates:
Somali officials say pirates have hijacked an oil tanker in the Indian Ocean and guided it to the coast of Puntland region. Sources tell VOA’s Somali service that the ship is believed to be a merchant tanker flying the flag of the United Arab Emirates.
Regional officials say they are still assessing the circumstances of the hijack, which took place Monday (Mar 13). Sources said at least eight suspected pirates were involved in the attack, adding that the ship moved toward the coast of Somalia in the vicinity of the coastal town Ras Asayr.
Comment: VOA didn’t reveal the name of the vessel, but according to available information, it should be bunker tanker ARIS 13 , operated by UAE company. It’s a small tanker, engaged in regional trade, calling region’s ports, including Somalian ports, and changing flags, it seems, with each coming voyage. Maybe it wasn’t hijack but some kind of “commercial dispute”, to be solved in local manner.
