Boris Johnson has been told to self-isolate after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19, Downing Street has said. The prime minister will continue working from Downing Street while in quarantine, a spokesman said. It is understood that Mr Johnson was advised to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace after meeting a small group of MPs in Downing Street on Thursday morning, including MP for Ashfield Lee Anderson. Mr Anderson said on Facebook that he began experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 on Friday and, after being tested on Saturday, received a positive result on Sunday morning.

Lee Anderson had a breakfast meeting with Boris Johnson in Downing Street on Thursday, the Ashfield MP wrote on Facebook afterwards. His November 12 post read: ‘Breakfast With The PM. This morning I met with the PM at Number 10. I was there with my wish list for Ashfield and Eastwood. Investment is coming, you have my word on that.’
Today I was notified by NHS Test and Trace that I must self-isolate as I have been in contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. I have no symptoms, but am following the rules and will be working from No10 as I continue to lead the government’s pandemic response.

Mr Johnson also promised that self isolation would not slow him down or ‘in any way impede my work in the next few days’. In April, the PM was moved to intensive care in St Thomas’ Hospital in London, where he credits medics with saving his life. Various other world leaders have also had the virus or been forced to isolate with it. Last month, Donald Trump contracted Covid-19 and alarmed medics by flagrantly breaking self-isolation rules. The outgoing US President potentially exposed various people inside an armoured car with him when he decided to wave to his supporters during a drive-by.
