Man carrying independence flag arrested under national security law
A man who has carried a “Hong Kong independence” flag to Causeway Bay has been arrested under national security law – making him the first arrest since the new law came into effect last night.
Before his arrest, officers have raised a new warning flag in Causeway Bay warning protesters they could be breaching Hong Kong’s national security law which came into effect on Tuesday night.
Crowds started to gather in the district ahead of an unauthorized rally against the national security law, which was scheduled to start at 2pm from Victoria Park.
“You are displaying flags or banners / chanting slogans / or conducting yourselves with an intent such as secession or subversion which may constitute offenses under the HKSAR National Security Law,” the purple flag warned.
Democratic Party legislator Andrew Wan was pepper-sprayed before being arrested. It wasn’t immediately clear if Wan was arrested in connection to the new law.
