Virginia man on FBI’s ‘Most Wanted List’ indicted on terrorism-related charges

ALEXANDRIA, Va — An Alexandria man was indicted Tuesday on charges of conspiring and attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization in Somalia known as al-Shabaab.

Liban Haji Mohamed, 34, was born in Somalia and later became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

The FBI says Mohamed left the United States in 2012 intending to join al-Shabaab in East Africa. He planned to use his own media skills to enhance the group’s online propaganda machine in an effort to recruit Westerners.

Court documents say that Mohamed attempted to recruit an undercover agent to travel to Somalia to provide combat training to al-Shabaab fighters.

In 2012, Interpol issued a red notice seeking Mohamed, and in 2015 the FBI added him to their “Most Wanted Terrorists” list and offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

Mohamed is also reportedly a close associate to Zachary Chesser, of Bristow Va., who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempting to support al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabab means “The Youth” in Arabic. Much like the terror group known as ISIS, al-Shabaab imposes a strict version of Sharia law in areas they control, which includes stoning women accused of adultery to death, and amputating the hands of thieves.

Mohamed is charged with conspiring and attempting to proved material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and faces up to 30 years in federal prison.
