The previous record was 1,179, on Tuesday (19), when the number reflected an accumulated figure for the weekend–a time when numbers are generally lower because of the teams’ duty schedule. The next day, Wednesday (20), there were 888 deaths.
The Ministry of Health released its numbers after its press conference for the second day in a row.
The acting minister, Eduardo Pazuello, who did not attend the interview, did not comment on the new record in the number of deaths in a 24-hour interval.
Asked about the increase in cases, before the release of the new figures, Eduardo Macário, the deputy secretary of health surveillance, said that Brazil is experiencing a phase of acceleration in the number of cases, but avoided establishing when the country should reach the peak of the pandemic.
Macário attributed the increase in the number of cases to a greater testing capacity in the country.
