NEW YORK (WABC) — 752 lives were lost on Tuesday and the level of deaths in the state remains at a flat, yet devastating, level according to Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“I say, personal opinion, it’s over when we have a vaccine, when people can say I’m 100% safe and I don’t have to worry,” Cuomo said. The vaccine is 12-18 months away and the governor said that “We are ready, willing and able,” to do whatever we can to reduce that time period. He even offered the state as a testing ground.
Governor Cuomo was also hopeful that medical treatment could help bring the virus to an end. He mentioned antibodies, trials, and different medications. APRIL 15, 2020
Governor Cuomo said that there are trials going on for hydroxychloroquine, antibody studies, and other medications all being studied. He said that, “it isn’t political, it’s medical.” The governor announced that the state is at a stagnant, yet high, number of deaths with 752 people killed by coronavirus on Tuesday. Hospitalizations were down.
“I say, personal opinion, it’s over when we have a vaccine, when people can say I’m 100% safe and I don’t have to worry,” Cuomo said. The vaccine is 12-18 months away. In the meantime, the governor called for more testing so that clusters could be identified and contained quickly. He said again, that testing would be the key to restarting the economy.
The governor also issued an executive order that people must wear a mask or face/nose covering while in public. It includes the times while not observing social distancing like on mass transit or walking on busy streets. There is a three-day notice to allow for compliance.
The two Democrats appeared together in the hard-hit neighborhood of Corona, Queens, part of Ocasio-Cortez’s district, to ask the Federal Emergency Management Administration to approve disaster funeral assistance across New York.
Death rate flat, but devastating
Governor Andrew Cuomo said that hospitalizations were flat and even a bit lower in the state’s battle against the coronavirus. ICU admissions are down, but nursing homes are an increasing issue with a growing number of cases. 778 lives were lost on Monday for an increase of deaths in the state for a total of 10,834. “Deaths are flat at a devastating level of pain,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo says he wants no fight with Trump
In reference to the president’s tweet criticizing him for forming a coalition to develop a multi-state reopening plan, “Suppose they gave a war and nobody came,” was on a poster at the governor’s grade school and Cuomo said, “Sometimes it takes more strength to walk away from a fight to engage it. The president will have no fight with me. I will not engage it.” Governor Cuomo said he welcomes working together with the president.
