Two National Social Security Fund (NSSF) workers have been arrested on suspicion of recruiting young people to join Al-Shabaab.

The NSSF Isiolo branch employees, aged 29, were arrested Thursday. They hail from Wajir and Garissa counties.

Isiolo District Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO) Peter Ndubi said police are investigating claims that the suspects were recruiting the youth from their houses and madrassas in Isiolo town.

The police said six young people were recruited to join the Somali-based Islamist group last week.

“We received information that the two were conducting their teaching and radicalizing young people,” said the DCIO.

The county security team has intensified campaigns to counter radicalization and is cracking down on Al-Shabaab recruiters.

Police also said some refugees had fled to Isiolo from the Dadaab camp to avoid repatriation.

He said the refugees are suspected to be recruiting youth to join the terror group.
