Kenya Defence Force jets and ground assault troops continued to bombard al Shabaab strongholds in Gedo region a week after the January 15 El Adde camp attack.

The process of identifying the fallen heroes will begin this week.

The jets and helicopters hit al Shabaab camps near Bardheere town in Gedo region, Daar and Ali Marehan, known to be the insurgents’ hideouts.

Other targets hit are in Diinsoor, Raxoole about 40km from Diinsoor and Qodqod as well as Ceelgaduud and Garbaharey in Gedo region.

This comes as the Department of Defence began the identification of the bodies of soldiers killed in the January 15 attack on the Amisom camp.

Family members who have made inquiries about the soldiers have been told to leave their contacts.

A list of all the soldiers who were at the camp on the fateful day has been drawn up and categorised into the survivors, missing in action and the dead.

Families of those who died and whose bodies have been recovered and identified are informed immediately and given a go-ahead to start funeral arrangements.

However, the military will have to conduct DNA tests on badly mutilated bodies, because those of suspected al Shabaab suicide bombers were also brought in.

“Because of the magnitude of the explosion, some bodies could not be easily identified and as such all the bodies including some of the attackers could have been brought back,” a source privy to the process but not allowed to talk to journalists said.

“It will be imperative to conduct DNA tests to identify KDF soldiers.”
