Police arrested a man who drove into the front gate of the U.S. Embassy in central Seoul, Thursday.
The man surnamed Yoon, 48, ran his car into the gate at around 7 p.m. He stated this was because he wished to flee to the U.S., according to police. Yoon was confirmed to be a government official.
He reportedly told the police he wished to flee due to a “North Korea-related matter.”
Yoon had been driving around Gwanghwamun from City Hall when he suddenly turned toward the U.S. embassy, according to those who witnessed the incident.
When police on duty restrained him after he got out of the car, he shouted to the embassy for help. Tests showed he was not intoxicated.
Police are questioning Yoon on charges of damaging property. A woman who was in his car when it drove into the gate was taken to hospital.
