A bullet is still lodged in the right ankle of a woman who was shot at by Al-Shabaab militants on the Bodhai-Bargoni road in Lamu County a week ago.

Ms Khadija Abdi was transferred to Coast Provincial General Hospital from King Fahd Hospital on July 13 — the night of the attack — and by the time of publication on Monday, the bullet had yet to be removed.

The 25-year-old Abdi was among the survivors of the attack which claimed lives of five people, including a baby.

The police vehicle which she and other civilians had hitched a lift from was burnt after being hit by an explosive believed to have been planted by Al-Shabaab.

She survived the attack with serious bullet wounds in her neck and knees.

STILL LODGED

Mrs Abdi was transferred from Lamu’s King Fahd Hospital on the night of the attack due to unknown reasons.

On Monday, the mother of four in an interview in the hospital ward, said she felt considerable pain in her ankle because the bullet.

Mrs Abdi said her family members and other good Samaritans have been helping her raise cash for treatment.

“I feel pain in my legs, the bullet is still lodged inside. Since I was given blood nothing has been done, there is no medicine to ease the pain. I just pray to God to see me through this ,” she said.

Her uncle, Mr Awadh Mardhi who has been taking care of her at the hospital, said he has been up and down seeking assistance from a doctor but his efforts have been fruitless.

“Since she was admitted, it’s just a normal nurse who has been attending to her. The bullet has not been removed and no one seems to be bothered,” he said.

Mr Mardhi said they are afraid that her legs may be amputated if things remain how they are.
